I’m going to gut my closet…

This weekend I’ll begin tackling a space I haven’t touched since we moved in, my closet! Initially I was so happy I had more than just a clothes rail and shelf in here. But over the last year and a half I’ve realized this closet system just isn’t working for me and I need to build something that does!

Ahhhh bifold door closets

Alex and I have our closets on either side of the hallway leading from our bedroom into our bathroom. Both are your standard bifold door closet. We HATE bifold doors, anyone else? 😂The tracks for both closets is wonky so our doors constantly stick and we are oooover it. The problem is our hallway is narrow enough to swap them for swing doors. Buuuut, I think I may have found another option… more on that later. For now, let me give you a tour of my current set up.

The current state of things

Like I said, when we first moved in, I was sooo happy to have a semi-custom closet. Alex and I had shared a closet in the rental house so I was excited to have one of my own in our new place. After a couple months though, I started to think about ways I wanted to change it and I’ve been tinkering with it in my mind ever since. I found that I could really benefit from some drawer storage. I bought a plastic set for underwear and socks, but I needed more for things like tee shirts, pj’s, sweaters with wide necklines; things that didn’t make sense to hang. The cubbies were nice, but they quickly became unorganized and have since turned into a place where I set random stuff. Overall, there’s just a lot of head space and the area that has the depth for pull-out drawers (the 48” between the doors) isn’t being utilized effectively. So, I’m ripping it all out and starting from scratch! 😜

The Plan…

Using IKEA’s PAX system and remaining boards from the current set up, I’m going to create a closet that looks high-end and custom built that has:
- A mix of hanging and drawer storage
- Upper storage, for out-of-season clothes, that looks clean and organized
- A main section for my current season of clothes
- An area for long items like dresses, jumpsuits, and my paint coveralls😜
- Laundry hamper and odds/ends storage.
- And lastly, a pretty, dedicated place for my accessories/jewelry because I’m a bougie bitch and I know it

It’s going to take more than a weekend and an IKEA Pax system to make this closet look custom built. I’m talking face frames, molding, baseboards, drawer fronts, paint, hardware, the works! It’s going to be more than a weekend DIY, but I literally cannot wait to get started. Here’s hoping I get it done just in time to pull out my Spring and Summer clothes!👗👙👟
