First project of 2022!

Like many, the Type A in me loves to start a new year prepped, organized, and ready to hit the ground running. For some this means clearing out their “everything” drawer, for others it’s a closet or two, for us… it’s purging and organizing our “shit cabinet”.

We only have four drawers in our kitchen, and they are all dedicated to kitchen stuff. So, we use one of our cabinets to hold all our odds-and-ends items which is less than ideal. Cabinets aren’t as friendly a living space for loose papers, non-stackable items, and that button you want to save to resew to your shirt. The next 6 months of our lives are going to be pretty hectic with me taking a class in Detroit twice a week, hybrid work schedules, and our usual chaos, so having a “command center”, of sorts, along with a clean cabinet was at the top of my list of to-dos.

Before

We threw basically anything in here 😂 over half of it hadn’t been touched in 6 months and we had plenty of expire coupons, random shit, and candy that was “best by June 2016” 😳 Y’all, we move to into this house in August of 2020🥴

First thing to do was clear the whole thing out and lay every item on our dining table. Most of this project was spent sifting through papers, putting things where they actually go around the house, tossing out everything expired… and sorting the remaining into logical piles to be put back into the cabinet. But before that, I had to make this lil’ space cute!

The key to keeping it all manageable was the acrylic drawers. They house anything that couldn’t stand up on its own or simply added clutter. I bought a small and large set and chose clear so we could always find what we were looking for easily.

Since we’re always adding things to this cabinet, and likely will need another drawer or two in the future, I added some labels for additional ease using my favorite label maker. This baby is super cheap and makes the cutest stamped labels! I know sound crazy but all you type-A’s out there get the hype of a good label maker…

Lastly, I added a calendar and basket for our writing utensils to the door. This enabled me to utilize previously dead space and freed up more room in the cabinet. The basket also limits how many writing utensils we can keep in there down to the essentials so we don’t end up with a million pens for the hell of it!

Sure it’s not the most glamourous project to start out 2022, but I’ll tell ya right now, my type-A self was living her best life this entire day😂💁🏻‍♀️
